What is Acupuncture?
The ancient Oriental science of Acupuncture is gaining
popularity in the United States because it is an
effective treatment of acute and chronic pains and
health disorders. Acute pain can often be cleared up in
a few sessions, and many patients have experienced great
success with treatment for problems ranging from
bronchitis to chemotherapy nausea to smoking addiction.
Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points
located near or on the skin’s surface. The stimulation
of these points alters various biochemical and
physiological conditions in order to achieve the desired
effect. The scientific explanation of acupuncture is
that the stimulation of certain trigger points on the
body by acupuncture needles prompts the body to release
certain hormones and chemicals that can reduce pain,
regulate the endocrine system, and calm the nervous
system.
Acupuncture stimulates nerves that transmit impulses to
the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of the
brain.
The hypothalamus-pituitary glands are responsible for
releasing neurotransmitters and endorphins, the body's
natural pain-killing hormones. It is estimated that
endorphins are 200 times more potent than morphine.
Endorphins also play a big role in the functioning of
the hormonal system. The proper release of endorphins
also regulates serotonin, a hormone released by the
brain which affects depressive behavior. Acupuncture is
an effective therapy for back pain, arthritis,
depression, and a variety of other health conditions.
Most people who have not tried acupuncture are afraid
that it will be painful. This natural – after all, those
big needles are pretty scary-looking! Most people,
however, experience only a slight tingling, if anything
at all. In fact, some people even fall asleep during
treatment!
Today there are approximately 18,000 licensed
acupuncturists in the U.S, over 50% of whom practice in
California or New York. Look for a physician with formal
training in the practice of acupuncture. Acupuncture and
Oriental medicine is an art and a science that takes
years to master. While any licensed physician in the
state of Utah can stick needles into you, for a positive
experience and results, use a certified acupuncturist
with experience treating a similar condition to yours.
